Common questions
Do I have to give a reason? No, and it is usually better not to. A resignation letter is a record of a date, not a place to settle scores. Anything written there can be read again months later, by people you did not have in mind.
Should I send it by email or on paper? Both. Email gives you the timestamp, paper gives you the formality. What matters is the date it was received — that is what sets the end of your notice period.
What if I want to leave sooner? That is between you and your employer, and it is agreed rather than declared. Put your contractual notice in the letter and raise the earlier date in conversation.
Should I mention where I am going? You do not have to, and the letter does not. Tell people in person if you want to — a letter is a record, and it travels further than you expect.
This is a template for the ordinary case, not legal advice. Check the notice period in your contract before you send it.
